Parents - A reminder that your child will miss out on social opportunities if he or she is not at school. Regular absence can affect your child's future prospects.

A message from Mrs Statham and Miss Mann

We started the summer term with a gentle four-day week. Next week we have another four-day week! This means that we have a lot going on in this rather short half term.

The PTA has organised four discos for Friday 9th May. Please check the closing date for money to be paid. They are also promoting the exciting Circus event on our school field on Sunday 6th July. Tickets are selling well. The PTA has sold 485 tickets so far. There is still time to treat the family to this thrilling event and to support the school at the same time. Food and drink stalls will also be set up, as well as a raffle, to enhance the afternoon experience.

As we approach hot weather season, please ensure your child puts on sun cream before school, wears a hat/cap and has a full water bottle. Our water fountains in the playground are available for all children to use during the breaks and we are thankful for our trees on the field, to give us areas of shade.

The Year 6 children and staff are working really hard as they work towards their end of KS2 tests, beginning on 12th May. We look forward to the post SATs trip to Broomfield Park on the Friday.

There are lots of trips and workshops to look forward to over the summer term including: Year 4 at the Tower of London, Year 6 taking part in 'A Moment of Calm' mindfulness sessions, Year R to Oakwood Park, Year 5 STEM Day at Chace Community School, Year 2 to the beach and Year 4 to Tolmers Activity Centre. We also look forward to our artist-in-residence day with Rachel, a mosaic artist, working with our Year 4 pupils on a piece of artwork for Enfield Town. All this, in addition to our RE visits to places of worship, sport and music events and lots more. What a busy term!

Help needed for the Prayer Garden renovation

We are in the third stage of the Prayer Garden renovation, to transform it into a Quiet Garden. Having a quiet outdoor space is so important for many of our children. If you have a child that might benefit from a quiet seating area, to take a break from a busy playtime, to think or just to enjoy a moment of calm, please come along and help.

We need around 10 volunteers to help with digging up around two inches of soil and removing it using a wheelbarrow. Some parents have given up two Saturday mornings already; it would be wonderful to have even more parents helping for this last push. Here are the details:

Saturday 17th May. 9.30am - 12pm.
Come through the car park entrance onto the field.

Please inform the office if you can attend. Bring a spade and/or a wheelbarrow

Year 3 Recorder Performance

Last week, our Year 3 pupils performed a selection of pieces to parents and family. Having only started lessons in January, it was lovely to see the whole year group playing together. Miss Jones and Mrs Statham take the recorder lessons and they have been impressed with the engagement and effort in the lessons. Some really positive comments from parents, too after the performance; many were very impressed by the standard and quality of the playing. Some pupils have since been selected to attend a Recorder Club, run by Miss Jones.

Thanks to our Year 3 parents for their support over the months and to Miss Jones and Mrs Statham for their wonderful recorder teaching!

Year 4 spend the day at The Tower of London

This week, our Year 4 children went to to visit The Tower of London, as part of their learning about Crime and Punishment in history. They enjoyed seeing the actually Crown Jewels and climbing to the top of the White Tower. They also learnt about people who had been imprisoned in the Tower and the different forms of punishment that were used. The day ended with a walk around the battlements, where the children were blessed with wonderful views of Tower Bridge and the Shard.

The Year 4 staff did an amazing job with the preparation and management of the trip, on what was the hottest day of the year. A big thank you also to the parent volunteers. This was a fantastic trip for the children to remember for many years to come.

Year 2 visit Fr. Steve at the church

This week, our Year 2 classes went to St. Andrew's Church to talk to Fr. Steve about Baptism. He answered a lot of questions about the church and himself, before demonstrating some of the things that take place at a baptism ceremony. The children were thrilled to try on some robes, too.

Another highlight of the trip was finding the tomb of Sir Nicholas Rainton, who the children learnt about in their history unit last term. What a wonderful link for children; RE and history in one place. A big thank you to Fr. Steve for his time.

Year 1 children begin their RE unit with a visitor

The Year 1 classes have begun their new RE unit this term, which is learning about Islam. We are very lucky at St. Andrew's to have many Muslim families, so it was only natural that we invite Mr Shah, one of our parents, to come to talk to the children about Islam.

Mr Shah told the children about the clothes Muslims wear to the mosque. He also showed them his prayer mat, which he said many Muslims carry with them, as they pray five times a day. A big thank you to Mr Shah for helping the children to extend their learning.

Year 3 start Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) unit in PE

This week, our teachers have been taking part in training provided by the local authority PE Department. Part of the PE curriculum is OAA, which includes activities such as orienteering and team-building skills and helps to develop resilience, independence and risk-taking. Above all, it highlights the need for children to explore learning outdoors. The Year 3 children had great fun taking their learning into our wonderful grounds this week. Thank you to Ms Sanders, our PE Lead, for organising the training.
